Biggest Leadership Communication Challenges

Tell me what you think?  Are these on the mark? What would you add or change?

It seems to me that the 10 Biggest Communication Challenges leaders face, when it comes to relating with followers(not necessarily in this order) are:

1. Communicating effectively in a group setting
2. Giving correction or consequences to "repeat offenders"
3. Asking more questions, making fewer statements and listening
4. Giving praise or affirmation for accomplishment
5. Being persuasive without being coercive or manipulative
6. Communicating to promote change
7. Changing a mis-perception when it diminishes trust, credibility or understanding
8. Setting clear, understandable expectations
9. Conveying empathy or caring towards followers
10. Recognizing and relating to the follower's behavioral or personality style.

  1. Great list Rich! I've been exploring "Communication Violence" and its solutions, and find one of the most difficult communication experiences is cognitive/emotive: reframing "problems" into opportunities. It's this mindset that fuels positive communication campaigns. Sometimes this mindset needs to communicate forgiveness. I also find a challenge, in dialogue terms, navigating the tension b/t meeting people where they are _and_ finding courage to stand on my center. The campaign I'm working on is http://nocmuviolence.blogspot.com/

    Kudos on your work btw!

If you or your subscribers would be interested in going deeper in learning on some of these, I've recently released a free white paper report in which I provided client case studies and specific communication strategies on "The 7 Deadly Sins of Organizational Leadership Communication."

You can download a free copy of it at: www.HowToImproveOrganizationalCommunication.com,

much of my 7 Deadly Sins touch on those on your list.

Keep up the great writing on leadership communication, we can always get better! Thanks for letting me share my thoughts.
